Police are looking for the driver of a gray BMW they said fled after fatally hitting a cyclist in Brooklyn on Thursday night — at least the third alleged hit-and-run to kill someone on a bicycle or e-bike on New York City streets this week.
NYPD officials said the crash happened around 11:50 p.m. at the intersection of East 54th Street and Avenue I in Flatlands. A BMW driver and the cyclist were traveling in opposite directions along Avenue I when they collided as the car turned left onto East 54th Street, police said.
EMS workers took the cyclist to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to police. The BMW drove away, police said. They did not immediately have a description of the driver.
Officials did not release the identity of the cyclist as they worked to notify his family.
Thursday’s crash came as police continue looking for the driver of a black BMW that they said fatally struck 51-year-old Angelo Camera, who was crossing the Bruckner Expressway in the Bronx on an e-bike on Tuesday night.
Police are also still looking for the driver of a pickup truck that hit 29-year-old e-bike rider Paulina Choc Tec early Tuesday morning while she was stationary at the intersection of Jamaica Avenue and Cypress Hills Street in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn. Officials said the pickup truck hit her from behind and ran her over before driving away.
Fatalities involving both traditional bicycles and motorized two-wheelers are up so far this year compared to last, according to traffic collision data from the NYPD. E-bikes, stand-up scooters and motorcycles are leading the trend, the data shows — each with several more fatal crashes this year than last.
