Welcome to the coldest week of winter! A cold front passage yesterday afternoon has put an end to our balmy weather. You don't have to worry about highs in the 50s any time soon. Today's high will be right around freezing. The only reason it will get that warm is because a low pressure system approaching from the west will grind into the high pressure system that wants to freeze our butts off. An upshot of that collision will be the chance of snow late this afternoon and into this evening. The city will be on the western edge of the snow line. We might get a dusting, but nothing like the lake effect snow areas upstate.
The cold settles in once the low departs and is replaced by an Arctic air mass. Tomorrow's high will only reach the mid 20s, but with blustery winds it is going to feel much colder. The temperature will drop to the mid-teens on Wednesday morning and the wind chill will be in the single digits. Wednesday's high will be in the low to mid 20s. Thursday might be a couple degrees warmer. We are likely to be hit with some sort of storm on Friday but it is too soon for details.
Here is a fun weather fact for this holiday Monday: According to Ye Olde National Weather Service Almanack of Central Park Weather Records and Climate Normals we are at the tail end of the coldest week of the year. That's right, the annual temperature curve begins it's upward tick toward summer later this week. The warming trend isn't really noticeable because it is slow compared to day-to-day weather variations, but with a bit more daylight every day warming is inevitable.
