Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance announced that the teenager who was found at the Herald Square Victoria's Secret with a dead baby in her bag has been indicted for second-degree murder.
In October 2013, Tiona Rodriguez, 17 at the time, was arrested for allegedly shoplifting at the store. When security inspected her bags, a guard was overcome by a smell and found the body.
Rodriquez claimed she had miscarried and didn't know what to do with the remains, but the medical examiner determined the eight-pound, nearly day-old infant, who was apparently delivered at a friend's apartment, died from homicidal asphyxia.
Vance said, "There is perhaps no victim more defenseless than a newborn child."
The shoplifting charges against Rodriguez were eventually dismissed.
