A building superintendent in Rye who was convicted of breaking into his tenant's apartment and sodomizing their 14-month-old Labrador retriever has been sentenced to 6.5 years in prison and seven years probation. 44-year-old Kujtim Nicaj was caught committing the crimes on film last February from a camera set up by the tenants, and pled guilty this fall.

“This defendant engaged in behavior that is not only reprehensible but also was abusive to someone’s pet,” Westchester County DA Janet DiFiore said in a statement obtained by Patch. “Taking advantage of a helpless animal is an act of depravity which has often been a predictor of violence against humans.”

Nicaj was convicted of second-degree felony burglary, as well as a count of sexual misconduct, which is a misdemeanor. After serving his sentence, Nicaj must also register with the state as a sex offender.
