Ann Pettway—the woman who captured Carlina White 23 years ago and raised her as her own child—has been on the lam pretty much since White figured out she had been kidnapped from Harlem Hospital. Police have a warrant out for her arrest in North Carolina, but she may have been recently spotted at a Connecticut pawn shop.
She allegedly attempted to pawn a laptop, hoop earrings and an engagement ring; a police source said, "The pawn shop called police 20 minutes after she left." Pettway is also violating her two-year probation sentence on attempted embezzlement charges by leaving North Carolina. North Carolina Department of Corrections spokeswoman Pamela Walker said, "As part of her probation, she must seek permission to leave the state of North Carolina. At this time, no such request has been made."
Pettway's co-workers said she always seemed awkward when asked about her "daughter." One said she loved to talk about her 13-year-old son, but "Whenever I asked her about her daughter, she got kind of weird, like she didn't want to talk about her." Even Pettway's mother was deceived. She said, "She was pregnant in 1987. I wasn't with her when she gave birth...[Nejdra] was Ann's daughter—until all this came up. I don't know right now what to think."
