The snow has passed and the roads are pretty clear in NYC. The new problem for drivers in the Tri-State area: Black ice, thanks in part to the freezing temperatures. WCBS 2 reports, "Slick and dangerous roadways are in store for drivers, especially on Long Island... the roadways have prompted delayed school openings in several districts, including Bridgehampton and Quogue, where classes will begin two hours late Thursday morning."

One Centereach resident said that even though the official snow total was 17 inches, it seemed like it was actually 7 to 8 inches more. But while Long Island got a lot of snow, Connecticut got two feet, prompting schools closings or delays today as well as Metro North to break out the buses for some branches. One school superintendent told the Courant, "I will either get the 'all clear' tonight or early Thursday morning, or I will get the 'We don't have a prayer in the world' answer. I think the biggest challenge is where do we put all this snow? Just putting it somewhere will be a major accomplishment. Crews cleaning it now say it's as bad as they've ever seen it."

And then there are the air travel problems: 1,700 flights were cancelled yesterday.
