As the Smurfs movie films around town, lawyer Stuart Ross—who has made a pretty penny from the blue guys in the past—is behind bars. Ross introduced the lovable blue creatures to the U.S. (they were previously only in France before he bought their rights), according to the Daily News—but in reality is more like their nemesis Gargamel.
The 73-year-old accused of being involved in a plot to extort $11 million from his son-in-law, Blackstone Group exec David Blitzer, and is now being held on $200K bail, which he can't make. Court papers claim that he's made threats towards family members, including his daughter, whose unborn child he hoped would die. At a court hearing yesterday Ross claimed to have leukemia, and told the judge, "Almost every month I was in the hospital." He'll be representing himself at a hearing on June 28th.
