If you were stuck in your car for hours while trying to get into the city through the Holland Tunnel yesterday, here's why. A rogue driver reportedly tried to mow down a Port Authority cop outside the tunnel yesterday, leading the cop to chase the Jeep all the way to the New York side of the tunnel and shoot at the driver.
The officer approached the Jeep, which had three people inside, around 6 p.m. after it made an illegal lane change just past the toll booth, but the driver quickly spread away. The officer grabbed the car, getting dragged for a bit, and was eventually pinned against a wall. He pulled his gun and shot into the car, hitting one passenger in the shoulder and another in the stomach. The Jeep took off into the tunnel, and the passengers eventually got out of the car and were pursued on foot by the officers. One driver stuck in the tunnel told NBC, “We're just sitting there and you kind of see in the mirror these two guys running towards us…banging on cars trying to open the doors to the cars to get in them. They keep running and about 20 seconds later and the police are running after them.”
One injured man managed to jump into the backseat of another motorist's car, but the suspects were caught on the New York side and taken to Bellevue Hospital. The car was reportedly not registered, and the legal owner has an open warrant for petit larceny in Orleans, New York. However, at least some people on Twitter weren't clued into what was going on last night, and seemed confused. One man wrote, "My night was going well until I saw 'Holland Tunnel' trending in New York because come on, who wants to be reminded of Jersey?"
