Our snowless, warm January is being followed by a very wet start to February. Expect rain and sleet throughout the day today. It's the dreaded wintry mix! We may even have a bit of thunder this afternoon. Actually, the weather freezing rain north of the city is making conditions dangerous from Connecticut through the lower Hudson Valley into northern New Jersey. Further upstate there's an ice storm warning in effect through 5 p.m. Within the city the ground isn't frozen so freezing rain won't happen here. Showers should continue until midnight or so.
Tomorrow is Groundhog Day. The winter season is half over! The skies should clear overnight, will Staten Island Chuck see his imposing shadow? Legend has it that six more weeks of winter follows if he does. Last year Chuck didn't see his shadow, but February 2007 was the coldest month in several years. Indications are that Chuck could be just as wrong, but in the opposite direction, this year. The furry rodents at the Weather Service and Weather Channel are both predicting a warm week ahead. Highs Saturday and Sunday should be near 50 degrees. Monday and Tuesday may be almost as warm with a bit of rain mixed in Monday night.
Super Bowl weather is looking a bit iffy. Well, iffy for Phoenix. Kick-off temperature will be in the low 60s, but there will be a good chance of rain or even a thunderstorm as the game progresses. Adjust your friendly wagers accordingly.
