Now that domestic partnerships can come with a ceremony, Council Speaker Christine Quinn is pushing for same-sex couples to get another step closer to marriage. She is backing a plan that would require clerks to inform same-sex couples applying for the partnerships of the five states and countries where they could legally wed. She hopes the plan would inspire lawmakers to legalize same-sex marriage in New York, telling the Daily News, "It think it will speak volumes about the inequality in our state. And the need for our state Senate to follow the lead of other states." So far, just two same-sex couples have taken advantage of the new domestic partnership ceremonies.
