We've made it to January with little more than a wussy-ass dusting of snow. That won't change this week, but it will be freezing, with temperatures expected to plunge 10 to 35 degrees below average.

By Thursday, highs are expected to hit just 20 degrees, with lows near 10 degrees. The chill will be caused by a dip in the jet stream, sending Canada's frigid air shooting all over us. This technically makes it a polar vortex, since the air is originating near the North Pole. On the other hand, the AP reports that "the low-pressure system isn't going to sink into the United States this year, just the temperatures that precede it." In other words, this is just winter.

The first round of cold hits today (you can tell!) and the second will greet us later this week.

Despite anticipated frigid temperatures, it's still not going to snow, which is good news for most adults and bad news for everyone who's spent the last eight months quietly awaiting their chance to reenact this.
