A federal prison employee at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center was arrested today for allegedly having a sexual relationship with Ronnell Wilson, who was originally sentenced to death for killing two undercover police officers in 2003.
According to NBC New York, Nancy Gonzalez, 29, was taken into custody in her Long Island home: "Sources also tell NBC 4 New York that both Gonzalez and Wilson have made statements to investigators saying that the baby is his child. Gonzalez is eight months pregnant. The charge is unlawful sexual abuse on a ward; it was not immediately known if she had a lawyer."
Gonzalez has worked as a correctional officer at the Metropolitan Detention Center since June 2009. Apparently three inmates knew about the affair and "told authorities Gonzalez had inappropriate relations both in Wilson's cell and in a vacant room next to his cell," per WABC 7. The Staten Island Advance reports:
"There was an inmate there that for whatever reason, I took a chance because I was so vulnerable and wanted to be loved and now I am carrying his child," court papers quote Ms. Gonzalez as telling a second inmate in a December telephone call.
Ms. Gonzalez, who began a relationship with a second inmate in September after ending her affair with Wilson, said she "kind of got sucked into his world" and "felt like, well, why not give him a child as far as giving him some kind of hope," according to court papers.
Court documents said she had sex with Wilson over the course of three weekends, the sole purpose of which was to impregnate her.
Wilson killed officers during a drug buy on Staten Island and he was sentenced to death in 2007. But in 2010, the death penalty sentence was vacated by a federal court, claiming that the prosecutors violated Wilson's constitutional rights. More recently, his defense has said he's too mentally incompetent to be sentenced to death.
