Police shot and injured a man they say came at officers with a kitchen knife in Queens on Monday morning, according to the NYPD.
The incident happened around 10:30 a.m., after officers responded to a 911 call from a family member reporting a man throwing glass inside a home on Parsons Boulevard near 85th Avenue in Briarwood, authorities said.
Police said the family member let officers into the home, where they encountered a 22-year-old man in the kitchen.
“Upon seeing the officers, the male retrieved a large kitchen knife and began to advance toward the officers,” said Assistant Chief Christopher McIntosh of Queens Borough South command.
A family member tried but failed to restrain the man, McIntosh said. He added that the man had a history of mental illness and that officers gave repeated commands to drop the knife in an attempt to de-escalate.
“Officers then retreat from the area and attempt to isolate the individual by shutting the glass door that led to the living room,” he said.
Police said the man pushed through the door and continued to advance with the knife. One officer then fired several times, striking him in the body. The man was taken to Jamaica Hospital and was in stable condition after undergoing surgery, according to police.
A kitchen knife was recovered at the scene and the NYPD said the entire encounter was recorded on body-worn cameras.
The department’s Force Investigation Division is reviewing the incident. As of Monday afternoon, the man had not been publicly identified.
“The NYPD is assessing the situation, and we are committed to keeping New Yorkers informed as we learn more,” Mayor Zohran Mamdani said on social media.
Police asked people to avoid the area and expect traffic delays.
