Police are looking for the owner of an Acura Legend and suspect she may have struck two women in a Prospect Heights hit-and-run early Sunday morning . Alma Guererro, 23, was left with a broken collarbone while Erinn Phelan (pictured), 22, is "clinging to life" with severe injuries.
Phelan and Guererro were crossing at Flatbush and Prospect Place when the Acura reportedly barreled into them. A cabby followed the car and copied the license number, alerting police, who later found the car abandoned a few blocks away. According to the Post, the car's registered owner, Cindy Jasmin, 31, has "a lousy driving record," that includes a lawsuit against when "she plowed into a mother from Hastings-on-Hudson," tickets, and a suspended license.
Police released surveillance video taken at a livery car service on Sunday morning (after the hit-and-run), showing a woman believed to be Jasmin. The Daily News reports, "She was 'acting strange' and said she had been in an accident, a dispatcher at the company said last night. A police source said the woman was picked up by a friend outside the livery cab service." Jasmin didn't appear at her job at a White Plains YWCA, but the YWCA's CEO told the News, "All I can say is it would be out of character, the character of the Cindy we know, if it was in fact Cindy that did this."
Phelan, who works for the city's volunteerism initiative, apparently pushed Guererro out of the Acura's way. Mayor Bloomberg said she has "severe brain injuries... This young woman is a fighter. She's got a big heart. And though she's only been here a few months, she's a New Yorker."
