Investigators are questioning a "person of interest" in a Madison Avenue jewelry store robbery that left an elderly employee dead. Though they aren't calling the man a suspect in the fatal Jan. 28 hold-up, the Washington Heights resident was brought to the 19th Precinct after pieces of jewelry stolen from the R.S. Durant shop were discovered in his possession.
As of last night, investigators didn't have enough evidence to charge the man and were waiting for a search warrant to see if more jewelry from the Upper East Side robbery was in his residence, according to the Post. The Daily News reports that police found the "person of interest" after "information led them to an undisclosed Brooklyn location where nine pieces of R.S. Durant jewelry were recovered."
Police have been searching for the gunman who killed 71-year-old Henry Menahem and made off with 66 pieces of jewelry—and discarded one Faberge-style egg—worth an estimated $1.2 million. After the crime, cops released a remarkably vague sketch of the suspect as well as surveillance video. Investigators were reportedly considering going to "America's Most Wanted" to find leads in the case.
