On Friday afternoon, a 20-inch Egyptian Cobra (whose venom can stop " the nerve signals from being transmitted to the muscles") went missing from an off-exhibit enclosure at the Bronx Zoo, and as of today...it's still missing. The Bronx Zoo wrote on Twitter, "We're confident that our missing cobra has not left the Reptile House." Is it time to make the requisite, "Why'd it have to be snakes?" joke yet?
The Reptile House remains closed until further notice, and zoo director Jim Breheny said, "When the snake gets hungry or thirsty, it will start to move around the building. Once that happens, it will be our best opportunity to recover it." However, though the zoo says they're making the snake's escape widely known on their website and at their ticket window, one zoo-goer says they're not doing enough. "They aren’t doing a good job of alerting people about it. We went to the Reptile House and found out it was closed. It’s really scary and makes me want to leave the zoo before something bad happens," said Sylvia Cruz. Just to be safe, everyone check your toilets.
