Police recovered 113 weapons at a gun buy back near downtown Brooklyn yesterday, including a M-1 rifle, a 9mm handgun with a high capacity magazine, and a 5-shot "palm gun."
In December a "wallet gun" was turned over in another Brooklyn buyback sponsored by the NYPD (and a rocket launcher turned up at one in New Jersey last week). At yesterday's buyback, held at the Church of the Open Door, those who returned functioning weapons received a $200 debit card, while non-functioning guns earned one worth $20.
On Face the Nation last week, NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said, "The problem is the handgun. 60% of the murders in New York City are caused by handguns, and we simply have too many of them." 56 revolvers were turned in at yesterday's buyback. According to an NYPD release, over 8,100 weapons have been surrendered since the buyback program began.
