Here are more photographs of the men (well, it looks like it's mostly men) waiting for applications for an elevator mechanic apprenticeship with Local 3 in Queens. Seven hundred fifty applications were distributed this morning, but only 75-150 positions are ultimately available.

The first person in line got there at 4 a.m. on Friday— he said, "If people are sleeping in tents on the street, that's evidence of desperation. I can't do much more than be the first on line. These are career jobs. People wouldn't go to this extreme if they thought there was another way" —by Saturday, it was a tent city with the line stretching for blocks. Now, the applicants will have to study for the test, which will be given in June.
