Last Friday, everyone knew Saturday was going to be a great day to be outside after our eternal polar vortex. The NYPD decided to take advantage of the lovely weather by cracking down on illegal motorcycles, dirt bikes and ATVs in upper Manhattan!

According to the NYPD, police officers were told not to engage in pursuits (last summer, a cop pursuing an ATV driver ended up shooting him). Apparently "both large and small groups of dirt bike and ATV riders were observed operating recklessly on local streets." The NY Times reports, "On Saturday, a group of more than 50 riders was seen on Broadway near West 140th Street. Later that day, about 100 of them streamed over the Willis Avenue Bridge into the Bronx. Throughout the day, commanders assigned officers in the Bronx and Manhattan to deal with the groups."

The NYPD says it arrested three people and seized eight vehicles. Here are some of the incidents:

At 5 p.m. on Saturday, cops in the 30th Precinct (Hamilton Heights, Sugar Hill and West Harlem) spotted a man riding an unregistered dirt bike on Broadway between 137th and 138th Streets. Police say that when the officers tried to stop him, he dropped his bike and starting running. He jumped a fence and scaled onto a fire escape at 529 West 138th Street. The NYPD says, "Upon reaching the roof, he continued to run across the roofs of adjoining buildings until he was apprehended on the roof of 503 W. 138 Street. A 2008 KTM 125 CC dirt bike was recovered from the roadway of Broadway, between West 137 and West 138 Street."

The suspect was identified as Andy Hernandez, 21, and he charged with reckless endangerment, removal of a vehicle ID number, resisting arrest, reckless endangerment, criminal trespass and reckless driving.

In an incident at 5:30 p.m., cops in the 23rd Precinct (East Harlem) spotted a dirt bike rider, Donovan Hibbert, on 2nd Avenue. When they tried to stop him, he dropped his bike and fled on foot. The cops caught up with him, but Hibbert allegedly struggled with the officers, who were injured in the process. Hibbert, 26, was charged with reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, and obstructing governmental administration.

Further, an off-duty Sanitation worker, Samuel Lopez, 41, was arrested for reckless endangerment, reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle without insurance after he was spotted on his camouflage-colored ATV, which police say was "weaving in and out of traffic, northbound on Madison Avenue at East 135 Street" and "driving both on and off sidewalks." Lopez was finally arrested when he went to gas up the ATV. Another ATV rider at the gas station fled and abandoned his vehicle.

Last week, the NYPD arrested a man who dragged a police officer 190 feet on his ATV.
