A pedestrian was struck on Canal Street by a truck, and a witness at the scene said, "His face was all bloody. His knee was all bloody. His pants were ripped up." The witness did not see the victim being hit by the truck, described as a large oil tanker, but he did see the truck speeding east.

The FDNY tells us that the call came in at at 2:14 p.m. and the victim, a 70-year-old, was taken to Bellevue with multiple trauma (witnesses at the scene said the man seemed to be in very poor condition). The truck may have been stopped in Brooklyn.

Update: The pedestrian has reportedly been pronounced dead at the hospital. The truck was also apparently stopped at Tillary Street.

Update: The truck, which was a huge oil tanker with a red cab and a green cargo hold with "B.L.T." emblazoned in white letters, seems to have returned to the scene, and police took the driver, a black male, to the precinct for questioning, but he wasn't in handcuffs.
