A 28-year-old Army sergeant from Ozone Park, Queens is believed to be the third service member to have been killed in an attack on a base in Jordan last week, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

Sgt. Angel S. Rampersad was previously listed as missing by the U.S. Central Command following the attack at the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base on July 17. She is now believed to be deceased, and the incident remains under investigation, according to the department.

“Today, New York mourns the loss of one of our own,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement. “My heart is with her family, loved ones and the soldiers who stood beside her as they grieve this unimaginable loss.”

Hochul said Rampersad “lived a life of courage and selflessness” and that “New York, and our nation, are safer because of brave Americans like her who answer the call to serve.”

Mayor Zohran Mamdani also thanked Rampersad for her service.

“My deepest condolences are with her family, loved ones, and all those grieving this profound loss,” Mamdani said in a statement. “For so many New Yorkers, wars overseas are never distant — they are felt here at home.”

On Wednesday afternoon, Deacon Carlos Garcia spoke to the press outside the Rampersads’ home on a quiet street in Queens. The Ozone Park Residents Block Association had met at the home earlier in the morning to place an American flag out front, at half mast, to show the family their neighbors were with them.

Garcia said he did not personally know the sergeant but that he was helping her family. Rampersad, he said, was “a church-going person. She loved her faith. She loved her family. She played the drums, she was athletic, and she wanted to serve her country.”

The family was yet not speaking with the press, Garcia said.

On Monday, the Defense Department said 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, and Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Carrollton, Texas, were killed by Iranian missile and drone attacks last week in Jordan.

Rampersad, who enlisted in 2019, had received the Army Commendation Medal and the Army Good Conduct Medal, according to the Army. She was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 57th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, part of the 52nd Air Defense Artillery Brigade and the 10th Army Air & Missile Defense Command, based in Ansbach, Germany.
