An MTA Bridges and Tunnels division officer shot a man during a fight that ensued after a car accident on the Major Deegan yesterday morning. Officer Edward Aiken was on his way to work at Randall's Island when he was rear-ended by another car in the South Bronx, causing his car to hit a guardrail. A heated argument led to fisticuffs, and Aiken was outnumbered by the four passengers in the other vehicle. So he introduced them to his little friend.

NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters yesterday that Aiken was being beaten on the ground when he discharged his firearm nine times. The alleged assailants scattered, but one round hit an unidentified man who subsequently walked into Harlem Hospital with a gunshot wound to his torso. He was taken into custody there, and the three other men are being questioned, but haven't been charged.

As for Aiken, he sustained head trauma and injuries to his knee, but was released from a local hospital yesterday, City Room reports.
