Don't fret if you see a large scene of police, fire department and EMTs between Chambers and Vesey Streets today. The city's Office of Emergency Management and Port Authority are practicing the city's response to a "simulated emergency." According to the alert, "People south of Chambers Street to Vesey Street may see first responders, but the effect on traffic should be minimal. World Trade Center PATH Station will remain open."
Below are photographs of an August 2007 drill the OEM conducted at Penn Station, which, OEM explains, "allowed the City to evaluate agency procedures as first responders coordinated actions, made critical decisions, and applied the City’s assets to save lives and protect the public following a possible terrorist incident." The scenario was a (simulated) fire inside a DC-bound Amtrak train and involved hundreds of responders addressing an "imagined fire, explosions and injuries."
