After a study and testimonies suggested this month that NYPD stats are all but made up, a cop-friendly civic group says the force needs to win back the public's trust. The Citizens Crime Commission commended the NYPD for its "terrific work" but urged it to release internal audits that they hope will prove CompStat departments aren't staffed with fiction writers. "There is no doubt that crime is way, way down," said Richard Aborn, president of the group. "But why have this cloud hanging over the department?"
Police spokesman Paul Browne wouldn't address Aborn's request, though he took the opportunity to pat the force on the back, agreeing that crime has gone down, reports the Daily News. Earlier this month one officer, who has since been suspended, said police routinely under-reported the seriousness of crimes or encouraged victims not to file reports. The allegations were supported by a survey of 100 former police higher-ups, and just last week a college student cried foul when a Bronx detective tried to downplay an armed robbery that left her with a broken jaw.
