Police are investigating the circumstances around the deaths of two infants in Brooklyn and the Bronx today. 23-month-old Jacqil Degraffenreid was found unconscious and unresponsive by his mother in Cypress Hills around 4:40 a.m.; the boy had been left in the care of his mother’s boyfriend for about four hours. It's unclear how the boy died, but sources told the Daily News he appeared to have head trauma and bruises. An official told the Times, “It’s looking like it might be criminal.”
Police are questioning the mother along with her boyfriend; she said he had been “looking after” the boy, but it's unknown where the mother was at the time. A neighbor told the Times he believed that the family had moved to the building from Queens just a week ago. An Administration for Children’s Services spokesman added, “A.C.S. has received a report on this terribly sad death and we are investigating.”
In a separate incident, two-month-old Angelise Correa was found unconscious and unresponsive around 11 a.m. by her parents in the Bronx. Angelise was pronounced dead at Bronx Lebanon Hospital. The medical examiner will perform an autopsy to determine cause of death, but police said it appears to have been accidental.
