A high-ranking NYPD police officer was "savagely beaten" by her husband, who is a retired Long Island police detective. Deputy Inspector Juanita Holmes, who was tapped to lead Brooklyn's 81st Precinct after its quota scandal, was treated for broken ribs after a fight with her husband outside a Long Island home. Some reports suggest the couple was estranged and separated but her husband, Williams Fowlkes, tells the Daily News, "We aren't separated. We sleep in the same bed, live in the same house. What happened, the fighting, should not have happened. But she was having an affair."
Holmes was at a residence in Baldwin, Long Island with another man. According to the Post, "Fowlkes, 47, showed up... while Holmes was inside with the other man, who was described as a 'friend' and an NYPD detective, according to one law enforcement source. Holmes, 46, allegedly told her friend that she would take care of it and went outside to confront Fowlkes. As the two engaged in a heated discussion, Fowlkes went berserk on Holmes and beat her senseless, sources said." The News adds, "Her piercing screams brought Holmes' friend charging out of his house - and he chased Fowlkes away, the sources said.
Fowlkes, who was charged with misdemeanor assault, trespassing and criminal mischief, spoke to the News this morning, admitting, "I followed her to this private house," and that he was outside the house for two hours: "Fowlkes scoffed at Holmes' claim that he was 'just a friend.' 'What were they doing for two hours - talking about Libya?' he said. 'Come on.'" Eventually, he went to the house and Holmes came down:
"She attacked me," Fowlkes claimed. "We were fighting. We fell to the ground. Maybe I fell on top of her."
Holmes wound up in the hospital with broken ribs.
Fowlkes said that as Holmes lay injured, he went over and banged on the door again. He recognized the man who answered the door as a guy who had been drinking with Holmes at a Baldwin, L.I., bar the night before.
"He had a gun out, pointed in my face," Fowlkes said. "And I'm like, 'Oh my god, it's the guy from last night'."
A judge gave Holmes an order of protection from Fowlkes. Fowlkes said, "It should not have happened. She's good people. We both are. I did snap, I guess, but she is having an affair. We have been married 10 years."
