Police arrested and charged an 18-year-old Bronx man with attempted murder Tuesday in connection with a chaotic confrontation with officers over a stolen car that ended with police shooting him, officials said.
Jayden Mendoza, of Lacombe Avenue in the Bronx, was charged after police said he drove a stolen Kia Sportage into an NYPD sergeant during the encounter on Sunday in Fordham Heights.
His attorney information was not immediately available.
The driver, identified by police as Mendoza, was hit in the arm and remains in stable condition at St. Barnabas Hospital, officials said. His passenger, 20-year-old Angel Robles, was taken into custody at the scene and charged Monday after police said they found a loaded Glock 22 with an extended magazine in the back of the car.
NYPD officials said Robles was riding in a Kia Sportage that police tracked to Fordham Heights on Sunday afternoon. When officers surrounded the car, which had been reported stolen a day earlier, the driver reversed and then accelerated forward, hitting an NYPD sergeant, police said.
Police said another officer jumped onto a parked car nearby to avoid being struck, then fired into the Kia, striking the 18-year-old driver, police said.
Robles was charged with criminal possession of a loaded firearm. He was awaiting his arraignment in Bronx Criminal Court on Tuesday morning. Information for his lawyer was not immediately available.
Multiple officers suffered minor injuries in the incident and were also taken to a local hospital to be treated, police said.
