New Yorkers don’t have to commit a crime to get the hottest Knicks memorabilia in town — a city trash can.
The Department of Sanitation is giving away five brand new, standard-issue 30-pound litter baskets that are painted orange with cobalt blue vertical stripes and rims.
The metal wastebaskets are the very same bins out on street corners that became a symbol of Knicks majesty after their historic championship win this month.
The winners of the giveaway will be picked at random through an online drawing.
The contest comes one week after a Knicks fan attempted to steal one of the 28-inch metal trash cans off the street during the championship parade. Angie Baez went viral after a TikTok video showed her dumping trash from a commemorative bin onto the sidewalk and carrying it off. Baez lost her job as a JPMorgan executive and was fined $75 for littering and an additional $100 for interfering with sanitation operations. The stolen trash can was returned.
“Fouling up our sidewalks and stealing public property should always be out of bounds in New York City,” Sanitation Commissioner Gregory Anderson wrote in a statement. “DSNY is thrilled to turn over five brand-new litter baskets to lucky Knicks fans, the same heavy baskets we use on the streets.”
Anyone 18 and older is eligible to enter the online drawing by July 3 before 5 p.m.
The winner will be announced soon after the deadline. Only one entry is permitted per person.
“Stealing is a technical foul, but entering this drawing to win a full-sized litter basket is a clean win for all New Yorkers,” sanitation department spokesperson Vincent Gragnani wrote.
Other trash-themed Knicks souvenirs are also for sale through the local brand Only NY.
While there's no calculating the street value of a historic trash can, a kitchen wastebasket resembling the special edition city street bin is selling for $168. A 4-inch trash can pen holder retails for $58.
