A tour bus from Canada headed to New York City crashed into a tractor trailer in Waterloo, NY, about 270 miles from the city. The two vehicles crashed on I-90 around 1:30 a.m. in the morning and burst into flames; both vehicles were destroyed by fire. The tractor trailer's driver died while 30 of the bus's 52 passengers were injured.
According to WABC 7, "The bus had been pulled over for about 30 minutes with a mechanical problem. The driver, who is Canadian, was pulling back onto the Thruway at the time of the crash." The tractor-trailer apparently rear-ended the bus.
NY State Police Maj. Mark Koss said of the injuries, "Two critical, 15 ranged from minor injuries to serious. And 13 were very, very minor were able to walk and didn't need any assistance." He added, "I am surprised there weren't more fatalities." A soldier from Fort Drum had helped pull passengers from the bus.
There have been numerous fatal tour bus crashes in recent months, most notably the March crash in the Bronx that claimed 15 lives.
