"He came here and he ran hog wild." That's what a WTC worker told the New York Post last week when it was discovered that a young 16-year-old from New Jersey Justin Casquejo had managed to sneak into WTC 1 after hours. This comes six months after four base jumpers took a dive off the Freedom Tower's roof. And, apparently, it all happened because some "cheapskate" security official over at Port Authority didn't want to pay the $4,000 bill for the two-camera system.
At least that's what the New York Post heard from a "well-placed source" who works for Angel Electronics, the camera's vendor.
"He looked at me and my colleague and said, 'Why did I spend $4,000 on this equipment when you could have gone to Home Depot and gotten something cheaper?'" said the unnamed source, referring to the unnamed official. (Oh well, the Times does it too.)
Around 4 a.m., the teenager found a hole in the fence, asked the elevator operator to take him to the 88th floor without any identification, and then snuck past a sleeping security guard (classic move) to get to the tippy top of the nation's tallest skyscraper. A security guard busted Casquejo on his way down, and handed him over to the police. When questioned, he told the police that he thought the building was supposed to be guarded by a "ring of steel."
The "Two-Camera DVR Solution System" was supposed to be installed in early August soon after it was purchased. Of course, it wasn't, which is why we're here. But then the whole story kinda falls into the ethereal realm of nothingness when you discover that Big Brother wouldn't have been operational anyway, because electricity hasn't been wired up to the 104th floor yet.
Of course, that little detail wasn't included until the final paragraph. Where is Viane Delgado?
