What do the American Apparel mannequins do at night? What if Spring Breakers had been directed by Lars von Trier? Those are the questions asked and answered by this video produced by a crew of Columbia University undergrads, but questions are like gray hairs—address two, and a dozen more pop up in their place. Where does a person get a blue chicken? Just how deeply can five women regret their college antics when seeking a career in accounting? (I recognize you from somewhere, says Blanche the HR director, lowering her glasses to her Ann Taylor peplum top. Shit, you say. I'll be going.)
The video, called "Initiation," was apparently filmed "very quickly and discreetly" one November Saturday at Columbia's Butler Library. According to creators Coco Young (artist, model) and Karley Sciortino (founder, Slutever. Past work: Blow job instruction video!) the film "explores the rituals of American Ivy League secret societies, to the point of hysteria, highlighting our culture's perception of female desire." Confirmed: This is what women do at sleepovers in art school. Happy now?
But...why? Young explains to the Ivy Gate Blog: "Butler Library is particularly emblematic of the male-centricity at Columbia; there are, for example, only male authors’ names on the facade of the building, a historic point of protest."
That might have been the inspiration, but was it perceived as intended by the unwashed masses? As one commenter wrote on Columbia newsite Bwog: "It was hard to masturbate to this."
