Sure, global warming might be destroying the environment one arctic glacier at a time, but what are a few dead baby seals in comparison to getting an extralong pre-summer weekend? Today, the Times reported that many city schools will be giving students two days off before the official last day of classes, due to this academic year's unusually warm winter, which led to a lack of snow days.

Schools are supposed to close for summer after Wednesday, June 27, but the Department of Education has permitted schools that request the days off to excuse students from attending on the Monday and Tuesday prior. (Teachers will use the class-free time for "professional development days." Bummer.)

But don't worry, the two-day freebie doesn't really make for an early start to summer! Students are expected to return on Wednesday, which is a half-day, for what we're sure will be a particularly productive day of learning.
