We can now add another thing that New Jersey won't let drivers do when posing for their driver's licenses: wear colanders on their heads. The Garden State's Motor Vehicle Commission, which previously banned big smiles, this week reportedly refused to let a pastafarian wear the kitchenware/religious helmet in his drivers license photo despite his vigorous protestations. In fact, the police had to be called.
According to the South Brunswick police Aaron Williams, 25, tried to renew his license on February 2nd while wearing a colander. He reportedly told motor vehicle employees the strainer was a religious head covering and he had a right to wear it in his driver’s license photo—head gear in ID photos are only allowed on religious grounds. According to Williams he is a member of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, a movement that opposes teaching intelligent design and creationism in schools.
When Williams' headgear was rejected he reportedly started filming, which is against MVC policy. At this point the police were called and they reportedly suggested Williams apply to the state to wear his hat. In the end Williams took off the gear and deleted the video.
This is not the first time pastafarians have fought to wear their hats in their photo IDs. In 2011 Austrian Niko Alm fought for three years to wear his hat and eventually won after a psych evaluation. That's Alm's photo in our above mockup. JAH PASTAFARI!
