At the New York International Auto Show, Nissan once again showed off its own Taxicab of Tomorrow, giving prime billing during its presentation to the Nissan NV200. Perhaps battling claims that the new taxis won’t be handicap-accessible, Nissan showed off the “mobility” model, which featured a ramp in the back of the car that allows rear access, so the handicapped can avoid traffic when entering and exiting the taxi.

Advocacy groups for people who use wheelchairs had criticized the earlier model of the taxi. According to Nissan, "BraunAbility, the Indiana-based market leader in wheelchair accessible vehicles and wheelchair lifts," on developing the "rear-entry ramp and an industry-first integrated restraint system that provides safe and quick securement of wheelchairs." NYC Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities Commissioner Victor Calise tried out the new model yesterday and proclaimed the cab to be comfortable and it "fit my needs and wants." Here's video:

Nissan also pledged to offer New York City both electric and hybrid models of the cab, contrary to earlier reports, although that depends on whether the TLC offers the option to medallion holders.
