Police are still searching for a suspect in the killing of 16-year-old Al-Taya Conyers, who was found shot in the head outside a Boerum Hill church on Warren and Bond Streets. WCBS 2 reports, "Witnesses who did not want to be identified told CBS 2 they saw it happen. They heard two sets of shots and saw a man in a red t-shirt dragging the girl by her ponytail as she begged for her life."
One said, "First I heard a series of shots then there was a pause, and then there was a second series of shots. And before the second series that's when I heard her crying and saying, 'Why you doing this?'" The Daily News says that the teen was chased down the street, by a man in a red shirt wearing a black do rag. Conyers lived in the nearby Wyckoff Gardens Houses and attended Cobble Hill High School; a neighbor said that Conyers babysat for his child, "It's crazy. I can't believe it."
Conyer's boyfriend Walter Glover was questioned by the police because, the News says, "had been arrested twice for assaulting Conyers, and for violating an order of protection." He denied hurting Conyers and said he was heartbroken. The NY Times reports, "Al-Taya had also run afoul of the law herself over things she had posted on Twitter and other social media sites; one such post led to her being arrested on Wednesday and charged with aggravated harassment, they said. The posts involved a dispute with another girl and a man possibly being held on Rikers Island, a law enforcement official said."
A friend told the Post, "She was a nice, sweet person. Crazy sometimes, but she was fun."
