Police have taken an 18-year-old woman into custody after she allegedly put her newborn baby in a plastic bag and dropped it eight stories down a trash chute in her Brooklyn building. Laquasia Wright, who lives on the eighth floor of the building in the Walt Whitman housing project, reportedly threw her newborn out with the trash after delivering him in her apartment. Thankfully, the baby is reportedly in stable condition in Brooklyn Hospital.

Wright, who lives with her mother, has been charged with attempted murder and acting in a manner to injure a child under 17. Her mother reportedly did not know she was pregnant.

Another mother in the building who didn't want to be named said she knows Wright and told ABC that the young mother "was in an unfortunate situation. I just pray for her and her family."

The baby boy was found in the trash chute by a super in the building around 7 p.m. on Saturday night when he heard cries coming out of the compacter. Authorities suspect the boy survived the fall thanks to the garbage in the compactor, which cushioned his fall.

Tragically, this simply didn't have to be. New York State has a "safe haven" law which says that any parent can give up a baby at any local hospital, firehouse or police station within 30 days of birth, no questions asked.
