There is still an appallingly limited number of handicap-accessible taxi cabs driving around New York City but at least it is getting a teeny, tiny bit better? To that end, the TLC has again approved Viewpoint Mobility's vehicle conversions which make cab models, in this case the Toyota Sienna, rear-accessible to wheelchairs. Some of them conversions have already hit the streets!
Though the approved Taxi of Tomorrow models coming down the pipeline are not exactly handicap accessible, the TLC has recently added a few more friendly options to the mix, like the MV-1. And medallion owners who have new Siennas in their fleets can convert them in a TLC-approved manner. We also approve! Even if we still wish the TLC had approved the Karsan Kab...
Meanwhile, the city should soon have quite a few more handicap-accessible cabs on the streets. When the upcoming outer-borough and upper Manhattan "street hail" livery cabs start rolling down the roads 400 of the first 6,000 are required by law to be handicap accessible.
