Last night was the the 84th annual Inner Circle charity dinner, featuring a musical sendup of local politicians and reporters at the Hilton. The showstopper of the night was Mayor Bloomberg, joined by the cast of The Little Mermaid, performing "Terms of Endurement," about his dilemma around his wish for a third term.
After Bloomberg flies a plane into the East River, he discovers the "NY Sea," an underwater universe not too unlike ours—except that the pun-writing skills of NY Post headline writers rule the land. There "Pike Bloomfish" looked for a potential stand-in in the race for "mermayor."
Bloombergfish found one in a surprise guest appearance from Caroline Kennedy. Kennedy said that she would run "only if I can give lots of interviews," to which Bloomberg deadpanned, "Or not." When Bloomberg told Kennedy that the press was looking forward to covering her administration, the theme from Jaws played.
The governor was the target of a little satire as well. Paterson told the Captain Sully character, "You ditched a plane..I ditched a whole state." The sketch also got in some digs about the mayor's run-in with Staten Island Chuck and his poor attempts at incorporating Spanish into public appearances.
On-hand at last night's $500 a plate event were Seantors Schumer and Gillibrand, former Mayors Dinkins and Koch and Congressman Charles Rangel. Newsday said that it appeared that attendance was down this year.
