While nobody knows exactly what Brooklyn mascot Borough President Marty Markowitz is going to do when his third term ends, we can now confidently say one thing the 67-year-old isn't going to do: run against Yvette Clarke for Congress this year. Earlier today Crain's floated the idea that "Brooklyn's biggest booster could soon be on the warpath to Washington." But the idea was quickly shot down by Marty's office.
Though he reportedly "strongly considered" running against Clarke, the Beep sent the following note to City & State today making it clear it isn't to be:
“I am flattered by all of the encouragement I have received to take my ‘Brooklyn attitude’ to Washington and make sure everyone in our nation’s capital knows that Brooklyn is ‘in the House.’ However, my dream job has always been Brooklyn Borough President and I intend to make my final 21 months in office the most productive ever. Congresswoman Yvette Clarke has represented Brooklyn and her constituents well, and I wholeheartedly support her bid for re-election.”
What Marty does after his long run atop Brooklyn is over, however, remains to be seen. Maybe tricycle spokesman?
