A man suffered a horrific leg injury in Manhattan when his leg was mangled by the L train early Saturday morning.

According to the FDNY, the incident happened just around 1 a.m. Saturday at the L train station at 3rd Avenue. It is believed that the man was in the tunnel at the time of the incident.

Witness Cojo, who took the photos above, told us that the trains had stopped in both directions when he realized what was going on:

I thought maybe somebody was doing something illegal on the train and cops were escorting him off the train roughly and he was yelling in protest so I tried to get in there and get pictures of the cops surrounding this man… but no, he wasn't being brutalized by the police, he was being cared for by them, and was yelling in protest of what had happened to him. It looks like he is pretty bashed up over most of his body, but his foot got it the worst.

Another witness—the man cradling the victim in one of the photos—wrote in a Reddit thread about the incident:

I happened to be on the platform when this happened and luckily am an EMT so I made a makeshift tourniquet with my belt and dealt with his injuries as best as possible. For what it's worth, the man was alive and talking when he got on his way to the hospital. He was a real trooper and kept himself together incredibly well given the circumstances.

FDNY adds that the man was taken to Bellevue Hospital in serious condition with injuries to both his leg and head. His name has not been released.
