Police arrested and charged a man with assault and attempted robbery after they say he tried to rob an off-duty NYPD officer and her husband in Penn Station on Wednesday night, leading the officer to shoot and injure the man.
Jahmar Stewart, a 32-year-old Brooklyn resident, was taken into custody following the incident on a Long Island Rail Road platform around 7 p.m., NYPD officials said. He was recovering at the hospital Thursday, and police said they did not know what he was trying to take from the couple. The officer’s husband is also an NYPD officer who was off duty at the time, according to officials.
The officers were not injured during the confrontation, police said. It was not clear if Stewart was armed, and information for his attorney was not immediately available.
The shooting occurred toward the end of rush hour at the busy transit hub. NYPD officials warned people to avoid the area Wednesday night as they investigated the incident.
