Yesterday, the mother of a young woman who died after being raped and beaten in a Queens alley attended a hearing for the suspect. Guihua Yu, who arrived in NYC from China last week to learn her daughter died from her injuries, reportedly yelled in Mandarin, "I want to kill that man! I want my daughter back!"
Carlos Salazar Cruz is accused of brutally beating Yu Yao, 23, with a pipe and raping her after grabbing her off a Flushing street on May 16. He was apprehended after a witness called 911. Cruz, who was reportedly very drunk, was wearing a shirt covered in blood just blocks from where Yao's body was found. Cruz was originally charged with attempted murder, besides rape and assault, but now he faces murder charges.
The Post reports after her outburst, Yu "fainted, hit her head and was treated at Elmhurst Hospital." Assemblywoman Grace Meng said, “She only found out her daughter was dead when she arrived here last week... [Yu] told the DA, 'I want to make sure (Cruz) is sentenced, and to return justice to my daughter. I don't want my daughter to die for nothing.'”
For his part, Cruz told the Daily News that he can't remember what happened (he was drinking for two days), "I never wanted to hurt her. I never even met her."
