Nearly three years after being convicted, former cops Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa were sentenced to life in prison for carrying out eight murders for the mafia.
Caracappa, 67, was sentenced to life plus 80 years, while Eppolito, 60, was given life plus 100 years. The Daily News reports, "The crooked pair earned as much as $65,000 for one of their hits on behalf of brutal mob boss Anthony (Gaspipe) Casso. The jailed Mafiosi, suspected of 36 murders, paid the rogue cops a $4,000-a-month retainer while they worked for him."
The two ex-cops say they will appeal: Eppolito said, "We still have papers that prove our innocence in the case. The federal government can take my life. They can't take my pride. I never hurt anybody. I never kidnapped anybody. It's disgusting what happened." They were previously sentenced to life, but their 2006 convictions were thrown out on a statute of limitations technicality, only for the verdicts to be later reinstated by an appeals court.
