Police said they were looking on Wednesday for a man who tried to make off with more than $1 million in jewelry from a Macy’s store in Downtown Brooklyn.

According to NYPD officials, the suspect appears to have entered the Fulton Street store while it was open on Monday, and stayed until after closing time at 9 p.m.

About an hour later, the man put 753 pieces of jewelry worth about $1.5 million in total into suitcases and tried to flee, police said. But he dropped the stolen goods when he was confronted by a store employee on his way out, according to the NYPD.

Police said no injuries were reported in the incident. Officials asked the public to look out for the suspect, whom surveillance images showed in a black hooded jacket, black face mask and black Nike hat as he entered the store.

The man police say is the suspect in the Feb. 10, 2025, Macy's burglary in Downtown Brooklyn

The Fulton Street business is one of 10 Macy’s stores slated to close in the New York-New Jersey area and was once part of a row of department stores along the corridor.

Police data shows burglaries are up so far this year in the NYPD’s 84th Precinct, which includes Brooklyn Heights, Boerum Hill, Vinegar Hill and Downtown Brooklyn. Through Feb. 9, they have risen 35% compared to the same period last year, from 20 to 27 incidents.

This is a developing story based on preliminary information from the NYPD and may be updated.
