One of the teens involved in the shooting of Nicole duFresne told police that duFresne was targeted because she and her friends looked happy. It seems that Ashley Evans and another female were being bothered by the guys in the groups about the girls didn't "fight or do anything." The NY Times has details about her statement:
"I then initiated the next action by saying, 'The next person I see, I'm just going to hit them,'" Ms. Evans said, according to the statement.
At that point, the group spotted Ms. duFresne; her fiancé, Jeffrey Sparks; and another couple. They had come from a nearby bar, where they celebrated Ms. duFresne's new job at a local nightclub.
"They were extremely happy, so that made me even angrier," Ms. Evans said in the statement.
This story just gets sadder and sadder. Anyway, Evans's statement said that her boyfriend Rudy Fleming's gun went off accidentally after duFresne confronted him, but the police still think the shooting was intentional.
Another act of senseless violence: A Guyanese immigrant was beaten to death in Richmond Hill (another NYC neighborhood where violence is rare) by a teenager on drugs. Gothamist on the Nicole duFresne murder.
