A grand jury indicted a Lower East Side man for killing his roommate last month, dismembering the corpse and dumping the pieces in the East River, according to prosecutors.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said Christian Millet, 23, fatally stabbed Edwin Echevarria, 65, with a homemade ice pick. Bragg said Millet lived with Echevarria — who was Millet's grandmother’s ex-boyfriend — and attacked him while he was on the phone.

Police walk Christian Millet, 23, into a car outside of an NYPD station on their way to court on Feb. 13, 2025.

Bragg called it “a shocking and brutal murder” during which Millet allegedly stomped and kicked Echevarria in the head before stabbing him at least 13 times in his torso.

Millet’s lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A missing flyer for Edwin Echevarria, 65, whose body police said was found in a suitcase in the East River, is seen on the Lower East Side on Feb. 13, 2025.

Echevarria’s family previously told Gothamist he was trying to help Millet by giving him a place to live. Officials said Millet periodically lived with Echevarria and had multiple arguments with him over several years.

According to authorities, Millet cut Echevarria into several pieces with a kitchen knife and wrapped his body parts into several bags. They alleged Millet discarded Echevarria’s remains in the East River over the next several days.

A bag containing Echevarria’s torso was found in February, and Millet was arrested a week later. Police said they found a screwdriver and blood-soaked towels in the apartment.
