Mets 9 Pittsburgh 8: For the first few innings it looked as if Terry Collins' tirade had fallen on deaf ears. Mike Pelfrey was awful, allowing seven runs and the bats had only managed one hit. The Citi Field crowd had already started to voice their displeasure, but the Mets changed everything with a great rally.
With two outs in the third, the Mets put together back-to-back singles and Carlos Beltran made them count with a bullet to left for his 9th home run of the year. Trailing 7-3 entering the sixth, Beltran got things going with a leadoff double. Jason Bay followed with a walk, but the next two Mets were retired. Nick Evans walked to load the bases and Ruben Tejada singled home two runs. Daniel Murphy followed with a RBI single and Tejada advanced to third when on a bad throw. That proved significant as he scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 7.
New York went ahead in the 8th with a sacrifice fly from Tejada and a bases loaded walk by Beltran and entered the 9th ahead by two. But K-Rod struggled, surrendering a leadoff triple and a RBI single before retiring Lyle Overbay on a popup to preserve one of the best wins of the year.
