After an incredibly bipolar season filled with multiple injuries, coaching changes, a revolving door of starting lineups, ego clashes, superstars unable to play with one another, and a month of Linsanity, the Knicks' wacky season ended Wednesday night with a 106-94 loss to the superior Miami Heat in Game 5 of their playoff series. There seem to be a million questions hovering over the team now, already threatening to make their offseason as dysfunctional as this past season. Can Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire coexist? Will Jeremy Lin be back? Will Mike Woodson be coach? Will this lineup ever gel? And will Stoudemire ever help Shane Battier get up?

Can Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire coexist? Uh...remains to be seen. Just don't ask Carmelo about it: “I get tired of hearing, ‘Can it work? Will it work?’ ” an annoyed Anthony told reporters Thursday. “We’re here to play basketball. We’ll figure it out. I don’t think it’s something that’s that difficult to figure out.”

But according to the Journal, "nearly everyone who spoke on Thursday acknowledged that the development of what Woodson called the Knicks' three "big guns" would be crucial." It's unlikely the Knicks will trade—let alone be able to trade—Stoudemire or Anthony at this point; the two will earn a combined $39.4 million next season. For what it's worth, Stoudemire thinks he, Carmelo and Tyson Chandler are one of the best frontcourts in the NBA: "We're right there at the top of the bunch with the trio. It's just a matter of time for us to really figure it out, have a consistent year."

Will Jeremy Lin be back? According to Woodson, absolutely. The only question is whether he'll start next season: "Jeremy's a big part of our team, and will he start? Only time will tell," Woodson told reporters. "He's still got to recover from his knee and use this summer to really work on his game to put himself in the best position possible for our ballclub. He has started for our team and he has played well for our basketball team. But this summer will be very pivotal for him in terms of his improvement, and the future's very bright for him."

The Knicks have the right to match any offer to Lin, which makes it seem likely that Woodson is correct in assuming he'll be back. But Lin is being slightly more cagey about it: “Nothing is set in stone. That’s what I’ve learned,” Lin said Thursday. “We talked about (my free agency). I love the Knicks and the organization. But at the same time, it’s a business. Me, personally, I think it would be great if I come back. But crazy things happen and I don’t really know what’s going to happen.”

Also complicating things: Stoudemire openly talking about wanting Steve Nash to come to NY. "Everyone knows that Steve loves New York and that New York loves Steve," Stoudemire said. "I love Steve. It would be great to have him here next year."

Will Mike Woodson be coach? Probably. According to the Post, owner James Dolan has told Woodson he wants the coach to return next season, with the contract details being the final step. But Woodson will have to get new representation if he wants it to happen. Oh, and Woodson better hope to hell Phil Jackson continues to have no interest in coaching Carmelo, because don't doubt that management would drop everything if Jackson wanted to coach.

Stoudemire thinks that having some continuity with their coaching situation will help stabilize the team next year: "It’s hard when you have a coaching change (Mike D’Antoni was replaced by interim coach Mike Woodson in March), and it’s also hard when you have a blockbuster trade (last year) at midseason for us to really coexist," Stoudemire said. "These previous two years, it’s been a roller-coaster ride."

Will this lineup ever gel? Uh...the team really wants to believe it can. Tyson Chandler acknowledges the team has serious chemistry issues: “We have to find a way to get everybody involved, get everyone an opportunity," he said. The Times thinks the problem lies in Carmelo's isolation play: "The bigger issue is how Anthony gets those shots, too often in clear-outs, while his teammates stand around, checking their smartphones, and while the players guarding them happily conserve energy."

Besides Lin, Steve Novak and JR Smith are both also free agents; Smith seems ready to leave the team based on recent tweets, while Novak may be too pricey. ESPN thinks the team just isn't elite, and could use an influx of new blood.

Will Stoudemire ever help Shane Battier get up? No he won't. But at least he didn't break any more fire extinguishers.
