The New York Knickerbockers fired coach Mike Woodson, as well as the rest of the coaching staff this morning, which should solve most of the team's problems (not counting the players).
After an awful season, Woodson was essentially toast as soon as owner James Dolan hired Phil Jackson as president, although rumors of his dismissal were swirling since February.
The Times names Steve Kerr as a likely replacement, because Kerr is familiar with Jackson's famously tricky triangle offense and is able to withstand the immense power and excruciating mental toll of Jackson's clairvoyance.
Carmelo Anthony said he supported Woodson: “I mean, if he needs my recommendation, whether it’s here or anywhere else, I’ll back him. I have nothing bad to say about Mike Woodson. I support him, and for me, as a player, I had some of my best years under Mike Woodson.”
Woodson was named the coach in May 2012, after he helped the team to their first playoff win in a decade. This season, they didn't make the playoffs. Last week, the Times asked Woodson if he felt he had been given a fair shot:
Jackson said in a statement“What’s fair?” he said. “I was given an opportunity two years ago to take over a team that was struggling, and I made the most of it. Unfortunately, it just didn’t go according to plan. So is it fair to let me go? I don’t think so. But again, I don’t make that decision. That’s got to come from the top.”
, "I have a tremendous amount of respect for Mike Woodson and his entire staff. The coaches and players on this team had an extremely difficult 2013-14 season, and blame should not be put on one individual. But the time has come for change throughout the franchise as we start the journey to assess and build this team for next season and beyond. Everyone in this franchise owes a great deal of gratitude to what Mike and his staff have done. We wish him the best."
For old time's sake, here's 11 minutes of Woodson staring at the team incredulously:
