Labrador retrievers may be the most popular dogs in the country, but here in NYC, we prefer our dogs to be tiny and bity: for another year in a row, the Yorkshire Terrier was NYC's most popular purebred dog. And what's not to like? They're spunky, hypoallergenic, good at learning new tricks, and some of them really hate toilets. They are also targets of puppy thieves!
According to the American Kennel Club, the Labrador retriever is the second most popular purebreed in the city after Yorkshire terriers; French bulldogs, German shepherds, bulldogs, poodles, Shih Tzus, golden retrievers, rottweilers and Havaneses follow. According to Thomas Bradley, chairman of NY's Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, the retrievers are the best big dogs for the city: “The Labs and golden retrievers are just so amenable. They’re so adaptable, even in small spaces.”
For the whole country, Labs are first (for the 21st consecutive year), followed by German shepherds and beagles. The other popular purebreeds in the country were golden retrievers, Yorkies, bulldogs, boxers, poodles, dachshunds, and Rottweilers. How could Bernese Mountain Dogs not make the list? They're such beautiful singers:
